Longtime network newsman Jeff Gralnick is returning to NBC News as executive in charge of “The News With Brian Williams,” the news net announced Thursday.
Gralnick has worked in the TV news biz for nearly 45 years, holding top-level positions at all three major nets, including a stint as exec producer of “NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw.”
‘World News’ years
He worked for more than two decades at ABC News, including as executive producer of “World News Tonight,” which rose to No. 1 during his tenure.
Gralnick’s most recent gig in network news was as exec veep of CNN financial news, a position he held until 2001, when he left to run a consulting firm.
His new position supervising Williams’ evening newscast on CNBC comes as the exec producer of the show, Bret Marcus, exits to head up special events for the news net. Marcus will report directly to NBC News prexy Neal Shapiro.
As executive in charge, Gralnick will have broad authority, while senior broadcast producer Patrick Burkey will be responsible for the daily production of the hourlong newscast.
“Together, Jeff and Pat make a formidable team and will provide new opportunities for the broadcast to excel and innovate,” Shapiro said.
