Fox, ‘Law’ rule Wednesday

Fox’s Wednesday lineup, which included a special hourlong seg of “American Idol,” easily led its two hours in key demos, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, while NBC’s “Law & Order” prevailed at 10.

“American Idol” (11.1/28 in adults 18-49, 24.6 million viewers overall) hit a nearly four-month ratings high, and the season finale of “Bernie Mac” followed at 9:30 with the skein’s best numbers ever (7.8/18 in adults 18-49). At 8, “That ’70s Show” closed its season with its best numbers since February (6.2/19 in adults 18-49, 12.3 million viewers overall).

NBC moved up to second on the night thanks to the final-hour push from “Law & Order” (6.6/17 in adults 18-49, 18.2 million viewers overall). At 9, “West Wing” placed second in 18-49 with its season finale (4.6/11, 13.7 million viewers overall).

ABC had a solid night, with both “My Wife and Kids” (3.6/11 in adults 18-49, 9.2 million viewers overall) and “George Lopez” (3.4/9 in adults 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall) placing second to Fox in 18-49 from 8 to 9. A special episode of “The Bachelor” called “Women Tell All” finished a tick behind “West Wing” in 18-49 (4.5/11), and at 10, “Extreme Makeover” (4.5/12 in adults 18-49) placed second.

The finale of “Star Search” (3.0/8 in adults 18-49, 10.4 million viewers overall) improved vs. its recent scores, and was the Eye’s top program of the night.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 9.1/23; NBC, 4.6/12; ABC, 4.2/11; CBS, 2.9/7.

In total viewers: Fox led with 19.4 million.
