CASBAA beats pay TV pirates in court

World Brief

HONG KONG — The Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Assn. of Asia won another round in the battle against pay TV pirates when a High Court judge ruled in favor of its members June 11.

Star, CNN, Turner Entertainment Networks Asia, ESPN Star Sports, Discovery Networks Asia and NGC Network Asia were seeking to stop companies importing or trading in unauthorized smart cards and decoding equipment. The court held that the five defendants — Gamestar Technology, Philip Yeung (trading as J.P. Technology), Tongyong Youhe, Li Ka-Siu and Flying Dragon Engineering (trading as Yau Po Satellite Co.) — breached copyright law and had no license to deal in the plaintiffs’ broadcasts.
