Broadcaster Globo’s got ‘Male’

RIO DE JANEIRO — TV Globo is developing a sitcom described as a male version of HBO’s “Sex and the City.”

The project, tentatively titled “Homem Objeto” (Male Object), is based on a comedy sketch that airs on the net’s Sunday night variety show, “Fantastico.”

In the sketch, four male friends discuss and commiserate about their relationship problems.

The sitcom is still in the planning stage, with no director or cast. Part of the holdup appears to be due to the success of the show in the Friday night timeslot that “Male Object” is intended to fill.

“Os Normais” (The Regular Ones) was said to be in its final season, but the sitcom is performing so well — averaging 24 rating points — that the net may keep it on and postpone production of “Male Object.”

Heightening interest in “The Regular Ones” is a film version to be released this year. TV thesps Fernanda Torres and Luis Fernando Guimaraes will reprise their roles as an upper-middle-class Rio couple on the bigscreen, and the sitcom’s director Jose Alvarenga is at the helm. Globo’s theatrical company Globo Filmes and Lumiere are co-producing.
