ABC taps talent winners

Recipients given $20K each in scholarships/grants

HOLLYWOOD — ABC announced the winners of its annual New Talent Development Scholarship and Grant Program during Tuesday’s press conference, hosted by net entertainment prexy Susan Lyne and VP of talent development programs Carmen Smith.

Program, launched in 2000, was developed to discover and foster new writing, filmmaking and directing talent from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

“ABC wants our efforts in this area to result in more than mere statistics,” Lyne said. “Programs such as this one are precisely what brings new energy into our business.”

Winners are Juan Castilo, Michael D’Amore, Roberto Espinosa, Yvonne Farrow, Johnalynn Holland, Stephanie L. Jones, Delores Yvonne Kenney, Yiuwing Lam, Juan Carlos Perez and Nerissa E. Williams.

Recipients are awarded $20,000 each in scholarships/grants to help finance their submissions and will be paired with an exec mentor for the 12-month grant period.

“We search for diverse backgrounds, not only in an attempt to give someone a break who would otherwise go without, but because it’s good business,” Smith said. “A diverse talent roster adds to our breadth of knowledge and experiences, which in turn broadens the range and scope of material we can then transform into entertainment for our audience.”
