Public relations veteran Susan Binford has been named senior VP in charge of communications for ABC’s entire television operation.
Announcement ends months of speculation as to who would take the top post, which has been empty since Zenia Mucha was promoted to head communications for ABC’s parent the Walt Disney Company.
Binford, who has held a number of high-profile jobs during her long career, begins her new duties June 23.
“Sue’s outstanding experience in news, entertainment and sports, as well as on corporate matters, made her the ideal choice for this multi-faceted executive post at ABC,” said network prexy Alex Wallau.
Binford will report to Wallau and to Mucha.
Most recently, Binford was exec veep of public relations for CNN. At ABC, Binford will handle press matters for the network and for the Alphabet’s TV station group. She also will supervise public service campaigns and internal publications.
Prior to the CNN gig, Binford headed communications for Turner’s entertainment network group, which included TBS Superstation, TNT, Cartoon Network, Turner Sports and Turner Classic Movies.
Binford came to Turner from NBC’s West Coast entertainment operation, where she was VP of communications.
She also was a member of MTV’s launch team and later handled press effort for MTV’s four cable networks, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite and VHI.
