Award winner based on true story of Irish women

Miramax hosted the last in a series of private screenings of “The Magdalene Sisters” for industryites July 22, hoping guests such as Kathleen Turner, Marisa Tomei, Erica Jong, Scott Glennand former Texas Gov. Ann Richards can help spread word about the Vatican-denounced drama before its U.S. bow.

Venice Film Festival Golden Lion award winner is based on the true story of thousands of Irish women forced into servitude under Catholic nuns in Magdalene Asylums.

“What really struck me was that there’d been no closure to it, that there’d been no justice, no recognition, no compensation, no anything for these women,” said Scottish writer-director Peter Mullan at the post-show dinner held at Gotham’s Hotel Plaza Athenee.
