Roberts flying solo as she leaves ICM

Actress was repped by Goldsmith-Thomas for 14 years

HOLLYWOOD — Julia Roberts has notified ICM that after more than 10 years at the agency she has decided to go without representation.

It’s unclear whether Roberts’ decision is intended for the short or long term, or whether she intends to seek representation elsewhere.

Roberts was repped by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas for 14 years, first at the William Morris Agency and later at ICM, before Thomas left the agency to run Roberts’ production company. Since Goldsmith-Thomas’ departure from the agenting ranks in October 2000, Roberts has been repped solely by ICM chairman Jeff Berg.

During her time at the agency, Roberts became one of the highest-paid female stars in the world, earning $20 million a picture.

She has starred in nine movies that have grossed more than $100 million: “The Runaway Bride,” “Pretty Woman,” “The Pelican Brief,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Notting Hill,” “Sleeping With the Enemy,” “Hook” and “Erin Brockovich,” for which she earned an Oscar for best actress.

The departure marks a significant blow for ICM. Roberts was among the agency’s stable of top earners, roster that includes Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington and Richard Gere.

Roberts recently wrapped “Mona Lisa Smile” for Revolution Studios and is committed to star in “Ocean’s Twelve,” the “Ocean’s Eleven” sequel produced by Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney’s Warners-based Section Eight.

Goldsmith-Thomas is a partner at Revolution’s Gotham office, where she heads N.Y. operations for the Sony-based shingle in addition to overseeing Roberts’ production company, Red Om. Red Om recently produced “Maid in Manhattan” for Columbia Pictures.

“We value our relationship with Julia and we remain proud to share in so many of her successes,” ICM said in a statement issued Monday.
