‘Daily Show’ ups topper threesome

Satire show must find humor in summer doldrums

“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” has upped Stewart Bailey and Ben Karlin to co-exec producers and named David Javerbaum supervising producer and head writer.

Emmy-winning trio had been serving in this capacity for Comedy Central’s media satire on an interim basis since early 2003.

“Jon Stewart has put together an incredibly strong team in (Bailey, Karlin and Javerbaum), and together, they deserve a great amount of credit for the success and critical praise that the series has received over the years,” said Comedy Central senior VP of original programming and head of development Lauren Corrao.

Beating the doldrums

First challenge for the group will be finding lampoon-worthy material for the summer, a period when news cycles generally slow down. “We’ll just do what other local stations do,” Javerbaum said. “We’ll be more active and make up stories about ways to improve your memory. And there’s always Fox News, which is always silly.”

Bailey began work with the skein as a field producer during its 1996 launch. He’s since served as both a senior and supervising producer. Previously, he logged producing duties “Late Night with David Letterman” and MTV.

Karlin joined the “The Daily Show” as head writer in 1999. He’s penned pilots for Fox, the WB and ABC, as well as several episodes of the Cartoon Network’s “Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast.” Before joining the talker, Karlin served as editor of the Onion.

Javerbaum also joined the series as a writer in 1999. He was previously a staff writer for “Letterman” and the Onion.
