Thompson garners ’24’ gig

'Blue' vet back in drama fold in Fox skein

Here’s some headline news on Andrea Thompson: She’s returning to the small screen — as an actress.

The former “NYPD Blue” regular, who raised eyebrows with her stint as an anchor for CNN Headline News, is joining the cast of Fox’s “24.” She’ll have a recurring role as Nicole Duncan, a tech specialist brought in by the skein’s counterterrorism unit to play a key role in what the network says is “an ominous terrorist attack.”

Thompson will make her first appearance on “24’s” Nov. 11 episode, a few weeks after the show begins its third season on Oct. 28.

After a five-year run as Detective Kirkendall on “Blue,” Thompson left in 2000 to do news for a New Mexico station, and popped up in 2001 on Headline News as a primary anchor. Cabler had just undergone an overhaul in a bid to attract younger viewers, and Thompson was a part of that strategy.

She ankled Headline News in March 2002. The “24” role is her most prominent acting gig since she left the news biz.
