Journo sez time is 'critical,' mirrors 1960s turmoil

NEW YORK — CBS News legend Walter Cronkite has agreed for the first time to pen a weekly newspaper column.

King Features Syndicate will distribute Cronkite’s column, which will be titled “And That’s the Way I See It.”

In the past, Cronkite — who keeps an office at CBS News — has turned down numerous offers to write regularly for newspapers. But in recent months, he’s changed his mind.

“In my years as a journalist, I have known only a single time as critical as this, when it seemed that the future of our democracy hung in the balance,” Cronkite said.

That time was the 1960s, he said, when Americans were divided by the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement and by a wave of assassinations.

King Features Syndicate, part of the Hearst Entertainment & Syndication Group, distributes materials to thousands of publications worldwide.
