‘Lilya’ helmer fields queries

Helmer Lukas Moodyson opened the Gotham preem of his unsettling new pic, “Lilya 4-Ever,” by saying “some people like this movie, some people don’t. If you don’t hate it, you can see me afterwards and I will answer questions.”

During the Q&A following the benefit screening at the Scandinavian House, Moodyson told the aud he didn’t set out to make a movie about the Russian sex trade.”It’s sort of like falling in love,” he said. “You’re not sure why.”

Newmarket Films prexy Bob Berney, who had released helmer’s “Together” when he was at IFC, bought the pic even though he was expecting lighter fare.”I think Lukas is the European director, so I figured it will work somehow,” Berney said. “It was definitely a different path than we thought he was going to go, but he’s a force that you want to try and help.”
