Pay cabler has greenlit a second season of its half-hour laffer “Da Ali G Show” and will produce an additional six segs slated to air next summer.
A takeoff on the original Channel 4 show, “Ali G” follows Brit star Sacha Baron Cohen as he travels the U.S. interviewing real people, including high-profile politicians, in one of his three alter-egos — Ali G, the hip-hop journo; Borat, the naive TV reporter from Kazakhstan; and Bruno, the Austrian fashion reporter.
Latenight show nabbed an Emmy nom this year for alternative series.
First six-episode season of “Ali G” bowed in February, drawing an average 1.4 million overall viewers and 926,000 in adults 18-49 in its Friday 12:30 a.m. timeslot. Encore airings on Sundays in April performed even better, attracting 1.7 million overall viewers and 1.1 million in 18-49.
HBO’s Nancy Geller will continue to oversee the show produced by Talkback, a FremantleMedia company.
Endeavor reps the thesp and packaged the show for HBO.
