Bright, crisply produced “Dream On” season opener “And Bimbo Was His Name-O” takes off on sex, ex, scandal, politicos and spouse abuse on the way to an hour of solid, urbane comedy. With all the laughs, all the zings and one of the funniest lovemaking scenes ever, show still makes characters just round enough to care about. Efforts like this should keep “Dream On” a wide-awake late-night hit for HBO.

Regular “Dream”er Brian Benben gives a fine blend of self-amusement, ingenuousness and sophistication to yuppie book editor hero Martin Tupper. David Crane and Marta Kauffman’s script moves along slickly and freshly. Story has that currently unique quality, plot, with plenty of twists and turns along the way to a satisfying ending.

This is good, pure entertainment television.
