Comedy Central taps Foley to fill in ‘Hollow’ staff

Comedian to step in as laff translator for Brit lingo

Thesp Dave Foley will exec produce a Comedy Central pilot centering around Blighty sketch group the Hollow Men.

Foley will assemble a writing staff, advise on sketch lineups and translate the Hollow Men’s Blighty lingo for U.S. auds.

“Being Canadian, I’m a good conduit for understanding 90% of British slang, whereas Americans probably get about 8%,” Foley said.

The Hollow Men caught Foley’s attention during a May showcase at the Comedy Central Stage in Los Angeles.

“There was a certain nostalgia for me while watching them, reminding me of when I began with Kids in the Hall,” Foley said. “They have a different style from Kids, approaching their sketches like dramatic pieces and letting the comedy sneak up on you.”

John Moffitt, U.S. Comedy Arts Fest exec producer and former helmer of HBO’s “Mr. Show,” will shoot the in-studio pieces, while commercials director Danny Boyle will lense the remotes.

The Hollow Men recently were feted as one of Variety‘s Ten Comedians to Watch. The group also took top honors at last year’s USCAF as best sketch-alternative act.
