Anthony “Tony” Caruso, a long-time character actor who gained fame playing Western film outlaws and gangsters, died at his home in Brent-wood on April 4 after a long illness. He was 86.

Frankfort, Ind., native was a horse-man and a boxer before becoming an actor. His first break was as a gangster in the 1940 film “Johnny Apollo,” the start of a long career in film and televi-sion and onstage, usually as a heavy.

He played an Indian chief in “Cattle Queen of Montana,” with Barbara Stanwyck, and appeared in “Zebra Force,” “The Oklahoman,” “Never Steal Anything Small” and “Across the Pacific.” In 1950 he appeared in “The Asphalt Jungle.”

He also made frequent appearances on television shows like “Gunsmoke” and “Bonanza” and was a guest star on “Get Smart” and “Star Trek.”

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, former thesp and singer Tonia Valenti; his son; and two granddaugh-ters.
