Askin to replace Zabel atop ATAS

Exec running unopposed to replace outgoing chairman

Tribune Entertainment prexy Dick Askin will be the next chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

With the deadline for candidacy submissions expired, Askin is running unopposed for the position to replace outgoing org chairman/CEO Bryce Zabel. Barring any unforeseen circumstance, that means Askin will cruise to victory when Academy members vote for their new leaders on Aug. 20.

Zabel announced last month that he wouldn’t run for a second term to lead the TV academy.

The race will be more contentious for vice chair, with three candidates facing off, and second vice chair, which has five proclaimed candidates.

Competing for vice chair are current second vice chair John Shaffner, a TV production designer; Steve Binder, a producer/director and governor of the Acad’s directors peer group; and attorney Jody Simon, the governor of the org’s professional representatives peer group.

Gunning for the second vice chair position are Mark Glamack, governor of the animation peer group; Michael Hoey, co-exec producer of the Creative Arts Awards and governor, television motion pictures editors peer group; Reality Central programming chief Karen Miller; writer/producer Lynn Roth, governor of the writers peer group; and CBS studio technical manager Cristy Trembly, governor of the electronic production peer group.

Current secretary Daniel Birman is running for re-election in his position; he’ll go up against production designer Mimi Gramatky. And current treasurer Leo Chaloukian is also up for re-election and will face off with Fox broadcast standards exec Darlene Leiblich.

L.A. area vice chair Mitch Waldow, a news producer, is running unopposed to keep his title.

Officers will be elected on Aug. 20. Candidates were finalized Wednesday night, just hours before announcement of this year’s Emmy nominations.
