This article was corrected on May 23, 2003.

Nikkatsu has bought Japanese rights to Antoine Fuqua’s as-yet-untitled film of a one-of-a-kind Feb. 7 Gotham blues concert, marking the first distribution deal for the docu. John Sloss of Cinetic Media closed the deal.

Currently in post, the project was produced by Alex Gibney for Vulcan Prods. and was exec produced by Martin Scorsese. In addition to footage from the Radio City Music Hall concert, the film documents the preparations and rehearsals for the event. Sloss showed 20 minutes of footage in Cannes.

The lineup onstage included B.B. King, Solomon Burke, Buddy Guy and Clarence Gatemouth Brown, as well as admirers from other music genres including Bonnie Raitt, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Macy Gray, India.Arie, Natalie Cole and Robert Cray.

The concert was in part triggered by a film series tagged “The Blues,” with entries being helmed by Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, among others. First film to be unveiled was Wim Wenders’ “The Soul of a Man,” which premiered as a special screening last week in Cannes.
