It may have seemed like a goofy ad, but it wasn’t promoting Goofy.
In the current issue of weekly Variety (July 21-27), Mr. & Mrs. James Brown announced that due to their “heavy demanding tour schedule, they have decided to go their separate ways. There are no hard feelings, just a mutual show business decision made by both parties. With love and affection, we both reached this decision.”
The ad was accompanied by a photo of Brown, aka “the godfather of soul,” and Tomi Rea Brown with their son, James Joseph Brown II — all smiling with Goofy at Disney World.
A colleague of Brown’s said the photo was chosen to emphasize the happy times of the relationship, rather than the hard times of a breakup.
The separated spouses were unavailable for comment; both are in Europe on a tour, in which they sing solo and perform one duet together. Despite the breakup, they may continue performing together.
