Yale Rep to host Chekhov from Russia

'Monk' to end this season; 'Fiddle' will play during next

SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Yale Repertory Theater will host a Russian company performing a stage adaptation of a Chekhov story next season, with such productions becoming a theme of new artistic director James Bundy’s programming. The current season will conclude with David Rabe’s adaptation of Chekhov’s “The Black Monk” (May 9-31).

Next season’s Chekhov is “Rothschild’s Fiddle,” adapted and directed by Kama Ginkas and performed by Moscow’s MTYZ Theater/Moscow New Generations Theater. The world preem will be performed in Russian, with English supertitles, Jan. 14-31.

Bundy’s 2003-04 Yale Rep season will open with the U.S. premiere of “The Black Dahlia,” adapted and directed by Mike Alfreds from James Ellroy’s crime novel (Oct. 17-Nov. 8). It will be followed by “Culture Clash in AmeriCCa,” created, written and performed by the Latino comedy troupe (Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza), Nov. 14-Dec. 6.

Pair of kings

Avery Brooks takes the title role in “King Lear,” directed by Harold Scott (Feb. 13-March 13), and the season ends with Carlo Gozzi’s “The King Stag,” directed by Evan Yionoulis (April 30-May 22). Another slot has yet to be filled.

The season will be divided between the 489-seat Yale Repertory Theater itself and the 660-seat University Theater.
