Broadway grosses

NEW YORK — Broadway grosses fell down a manhole during Week 49 (April 28-May 4), tumbling by 13.8% to $13,942,312. Attendance was off by a similar 11.3%, to 225,123.

The slide can mostly be explained by the absence of spring break visitors: Disney tuners “Aida” and “Beauty and the Beast” led the decliners, with falloffs of roughly $200,000 each, alongside “42nd Street” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

“Vincent in Brixton” cut short an announced extension and shuttered May 4 with a take of $189,806. Also calling it quits before the summer doldrums was “Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam.”

The 22 musicals grossed $11,634,498, for 83.4% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 180,607 at 75.1% of capacity.

The 10 plays grossed $2,199,808, for 15.8% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 41,370 at 59.4% of capacity.

Average ticket prices were $64.42 for musicals, $53.17 for plays and $63.23 for all shows.
