Donovan Leitch, Clarence Williams III and JoNell Kennedy will star in the Geffen Playhouse’s first production of the season, Stephen Jeffreys’ “I Just Stopped by to See the Man.”
Set in the Mississippi Delta in the mid-1970s, legiter explores the bonds between rock ‘n’ roll and the blues, black and white, and legend and reality. Williams plays a blues man long thought dead; Kennedy is his political activist daughter; Leitch, son of ’60s folk-rock legend Donovan, portrays a British rock star. Geffen artistic director Randall Arney will direct.
Play premiered two years ago at the Royal Court Theater in London and debuted in the U.S. last year at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater.
Previews begin Sept. 9 and the show runs through Oct. 19.
All three of the actors have strong musical connections: Williams is the grandson of two blues singers; Donovan is lead singer of the rock band Nancy Boy; and Kennedy, daughter of a member of New Orleans vocal group the Dixie Cups, sings with band the Soul of John Black.
