Diaz sings ‘Jane’ refrain

'Angels' thesp joins 'Almighty' Carrey in 'Mask' reunion

Cameron Diaz will star alongside Jim Carrey in Columbia’s remake of the 1977 comedy “Fun With Dick and Jane,” marking the duo’s first pairing since “The Mask,” the film that made stars of both.

Joel and Ethan Coen are being engaged for a rewrite on a film that has Barry Sonnenfeld skedded to start production in eight weeks.

Diaz has agreed to play Jane, half of an upscale couple forced to commit crimes to pay the bills. Subject to her deal being made, Diaz will play the role originated by Jane Fonda, who starred with George Segal.

Brian Grazer is producing, and Carrey will be a producer as well on a film that came together lightning quick.

The “Fun” began during the spring, when Carrey had the notion to sneak in a comedy after the April start of “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” pushed back to December after Sonnenfeld exited as director. Carrey’s posted some of the strongest overseas grosses of his career in “Bruce Almighty,” but because his next film is “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” he would have gone more than a year between comedies because of the “Snicket” postponement.

“Fun” gave Carrey the chance to make another comedy and work with Sonnenfeld, but only if the remake came together quickly. Carrey, who had Diaz in mind all along as his co-star, brought in his go-to guy Judd Apatow, who in two weeks created a blueprint for an updated film. Grazer is bringing on the Coens, with whom he just completed “Intolerable Cruelty,” a black comedy starring George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Since starring in “Gangs of New York,” Diaz has been in full throttle sequel mode. She just starred in Columbia’s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and is reprising the voice of the princess in “Shrek 2” at DreamWorks. She is repped by CAA and the Firm.
