U’s turning a Double play

Shamberg, Sher set up new shop on Universal lot

In anticipation of their separation from Danny DeVito and the dissolution of Jersey Films June 30, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher have launched their own production single, Double Feature Films, and have inked a multiyear, first-look production pact with Universal.

DeVito is holding onto the Jersey moniker.

“It will be easier to get a company up and running because of the pre-existing relationship (with Universal),” Shamberg told Daily Variety.

The duo had spoken to other studios, but settled on staying with U. “It was always our desire to stay,” Sher said.

Though smaller than Jersey, the duo said they plan to keep about a dozen staffers on the payroll.

Double Feature will share production credit with Jersey on any future pics from Jersey’s current inventory of development projects.

Those include two pics Brett Ratner is attached to direct, “Get Shorty” sequel “Be Cool” and “Peppermint Lounge”; “Freedom Writers,” which Richard LaGravenese wrote and will direct, and an adaptation of Lawrence Block’s “A Walk Among the Tombstones.”

However any unreleased Jersey pics completed by June 30, including the untitled John Hamburg romantic comedy and Zach Braff helmed and starrer “Large’s Ark,” will be sole Jersey credits.

“While a part of Jersey, Shamberg and Sher produced a slate of entertaining, intelligent and uncompromising movies that defied restrictive categorization,” U chair Stacey Snider said in a statement.
