MADRID — Spanish production powerhouse Sogecine has struck a film co-production pact with top Spanish indie distrib TriPictures.
Though not formally signed, deal looks set to kick off with “XXL,” a comedy about working-class friends who dream of finding women and wealth.
Pic will be helmed by Julio Sanchez Valdes (“De tripas corazon”), with production beginning in October.
Sogecine and TriPictures are hunting for a 19- to 24-year-old unknown to play Fali, the lead.
Budget and the partners’ production equity were not disclosed. The co-production alliance between two of the country’s most capitalized movie companies should, however, boost Spain’s flagging production levels.
The pic production arm of Spanish pay TV conglom Sogecable, Sogecine co-produced the two highest-grossing Spanish films ever: Alejandro Amenabar’s “The Others,” which made €26.6 million ($30.3 million) in Spain, and “Mortadelo & Filemon: The Big Adventure” ($23.7 million).
TriPictures was Spain’s second highest-grossing indie distrib last year, with its releases taking $36.9 million at the Spanish B.O.
Sogecine sister distrib Sogepaq looks set to take international on films coming out of the alliance.
