Polanski picked for ‘Pianist’

Teuton nod also given to 'Point' helmer Dresen

COLOGNE — The German state of Bavaria bestowed its Award of Honor on helmer Roman Polanski for his Cannes-winning “The Pianist” in Munich on Friday.

Helmer kudos went to Andreas Dresen for “Grill Point,” which won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Fest last year. Pic’s Axel Prahl received the actor award. Actress honors went to Marie Baumer for her role in drama “An Ape Called Fear.”

Uschi Reich, producer of Germany’s top grossing local film of 2002, received the Bayerischer Filmpreis award for her “Bibi Blocksberg” and for the third film version of popular children’s book “The Flying Classroom,” both made at Munich-based Bavaria Film studios. “The success of both productions is proof of the encouraging development of high-quality children and family films in Germany,” said Bavarian Premier and former Chancellor candidate Edmund Stoiber at the presentation.
