‘Mystic,’ ‘In America’ top B’cast Crix list

Org taps noms in 16 categories

HOLLYWOOD — “Mystic River” and “In America” topped the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.’s list for 2003, receiving eight and seven, respectively, Critics’ Choice Award nominations on Tuesday.

Among the nods for “Mystic River” were actor (Sean Penn), director and composer (Clint Eastwood) and writer (Brian Helgeland). “In America” picked up noms for actress (Samantha Morton), director (Jim Sheridan) and writer (Jim Sheridan, Kirsten Sheridan and Naomi Sheridan), among others.

Both pics were nommed in the feature category, along with “Big Fish,” “Cold Mountain,” “Finding Nemo,” “The Last Samurai,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” “Lost in Translation,” “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” and “Seabiscuit.”

The 182 members of the BFCA — the largest film critics org in the U.S. and Canada, repping TV, radio and online critics — tapped nominees in 16 categories. Winners will be revealed Jan. 10 at the ninth annual Critics’ Choice Awards at the BevHills Hotel.

E! Entertainment Television will telecast the ceremony, to be hosted by thesp Eric McCormack.

Org previously announced it will jumpstart the 2004 Critics’ Choice Awards with its new 10 Best Fest, a week of film screenings devoted to best picture nominees, from Jan. 2-8 at the Pacific Design Center.
