TORONTO — Big screen movie company Imax Corp. has inked with Shanghai United Cinema Line to install MPX theater systems in a multiplex in Shanghai and Southern China, the exact location of which is to be determined.
The new theaters will show 2D and 3D large format films as well as Hollywood event films that have been converted to Imax format using the company’s DMR technology.
“China is a highly desirable growth market, and one where the Imax brand has become increasingly recognized,” said Rich Gelfond and Brad Wechsler, co-chairmen and Co-CEOs of Imax in a statement.
The recently launched MPX system reduces the capital and operating costs of setting up an Imax theater.
The deal brings the number of Imax theaters skedded to be open in China by 2005 to ten, making it Imax’s fastest-growing market. There are more than 230 Imax theaters in 34 countries.
