IFC takes ‘Void’ rights

Pic based on Simpson's disastrous Andes expedition

IFC Films has acquired all North American rights to “Touching the Void,” based on the best-selling book of the same title by world-renowned mountaineer Joe Simpson.

Acquisition was announced today by Jonathan Sehring, prexy of IFC Entertainment and by Alison Thompson, head of Pathe International UK.

“Void” relates a disastrous climbing expedition in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. During a climb into previously unexplored west face of the Siula Grande, climber Joe Simpson was injured and had to be rescued dramatically by his partner, Simon Yates.

Pic is directed by Kevin MacDonald, an Oscar-winner for the docu about the 1972 Munich Olympics, “One Day in September,” and was produced by John Smithson and Darlow Smithson for Film Four and The Film Council in association with Channel 4 and PBS.

The film is currently unspooling at the Telluride fest, and will screen as a special presentation in Toronto on September 5, 6 and 7. While the pic will be released in 2004, a more specific date has yet to be determined, according to an IFC spokeswoman.
