SYDNEY — Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Entertainment has nabbed worldwide rights to “Jindabyne,” Oz helmer Ray Lawrence’s follow-up to his 2001 hit “Lantana.”
It’s Icon’s first Australian acquisition since Icon Film Distribution Australia launched in 2001 and is the first in a two-pic deal between IFD and Sydney-based RGM Films.
Inspired by a Raymond Carver short story, screenplay by Beatrix Christian portrays the frailty of marriage and relationships.
No cast has been signed but filming is due to start in New South Wales in January.
Lawrence said he read the Carver story just after wrapping “Bliss” in 1985 and “it has haunted me since then, so I’m very excited by the prospect of finally having the opportunity of making it into a film.:
“Jindabyne” will be produced by Lawrence and Cate Jarman, with Davey and Barrie M. Osborne as exec producers.
