AMPAS elects 14 governors

Officials begin terms next month

Five new governors, four of them first-timers, and nine incumbents have been elected by their branches to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

The 14 governors will begin their three-year terms Aug. 1.

Board newcomers are Caleb Deschanel, cinematographers branch; Larry Gordon, producers; Kevin O’Connell, sound; and Tom Sherak, executives. Returning is Bruce Broughton, who represented the music branch for three terms between 1990 and 1999.

Incumbents are Ed Begley Jr., actors; Jeannine Oppewall, art directors; Michael Mann, directors; Arthur Dong, documentary; Dede Allen, film editors; Cheryl Boone Isaacs, public relations; Jon Bloom, short films and feature animations; Richard Edlund, visual effects and Frank Pierson, writers.

Three governors represent each of the Academy’s branches and are elected for staggered terms, so each branch elects one governor every year.
