Columbia Pictures has hired Phillip Wen to adapt Swedish pic “Kopps” as a vehicle for Adam Sandler to produce.
Wen, a story editor and writer on ABC skein “Spin City” for five seasons, recently sold “The Von Doozers” to Dimension Films for $500,000 against $1 million in April. He’s repped in the “Kopps” deal by Endeavor and Benderspink.
Produced by Sandler and Jack Giarraputo via thesp’s Happy Madison shingle, “Kopps” also is being produced by Amanda Klein and Michael Nash’s Primal Pictures, which brought pic to Happy Madison exec Tom McNulty.
Pic is the story of a small town that’s so crime-free the local police station is about to be closed. Desperate to save their jobs, two officers go on a crime spree in hopes of proving the station’s necessity.
Col optioned rights to pic from the original’s producer, Lars Jonsson, who was repped by Anonymous Content. Col co-prexy of production Doug Belgrad is overseeing for the studio.
Released in February, “Kopps” was directed and co-written by 25-year-old helmer Josef Fares.
