Sony-based production and financing outfit Escape Artists has won the bidding derby for “The Weatherman,” the spec that marks the return of scribe Steve Conrad.
Conrad last penned 1993 Robert Duvall/Richard Harris starrer “Wrestling Ernest Hemingway,” directed by Randa Haines for Warner Bros. He scribe decamped for Chicago shortly thereafter and hasn’t shopped a spec since.
Until, that is, last week, when United Artists, Fox, Focus Features and Fine Line Features were hotly in contention for the spec, which sold to Escape Artists for low-six against high-six figures. Pic is being produced by Todd Black of Escape Artists.
Pic, described as a midlife “About Schmidt,” follows a divorced TV weatherman, about to leave Chi for Gotham, who tries to reconcile with his estranged wife and kids.
Scribe was repped by tenpercentery BWCS and his managers LMRK.
