U takes June B.O. title with $336 mil

Studio wins crown, but 'Nemo' swims as top film

The Hulk, a god-like man, and some hot rods propelled Universal to the top spot of the June box office with $336 million. The company currently sits atop the summer derby with a take of $436 million.

Overall, the month’s receipts totaled $986 million, up 3% over the same five-weekend frame last year. Disney placed second with $265 million, a bulk of that generated by “Finding Nemo.”

With three wide releases opening to lackluster results during the second weekend of June, some industryites might be scratching their heads as to how last month could have bested the same sesh last year. The answer: longer legs. Four pics generated more than $100 million last month vs. two in June ’02.

The June sequel B.O. totaled $276 million, a 50% uptick over the same frame last year. Six sequels were playing last month versus two in June ’02.

The top 10 pics for the period of May 30 — June 29 were as follows: Disney-Pixar’s “Finding Nemo,” $254 million; U-Spyglass’ “Bruce Almighty,” $121 million; U’s “2 Fast 2 Furious,” $114 million; U’s “The Hulk,” $101 million; Par’s “The Italian Job,” $77 million; WB-Village Roadshow’s “The Matrix Reloaded,” $52 million; Sony’s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” $38 million; Par’s “Rugrats Go Wild,” $31 million; Sony-Revolution’s “Hollywood Homicide,” $27 million; New Line’s “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd,” $24 million.
