A live-action pic based on hit Japanese animated TV series “Neon Genesis Evangelion” is in the works.
Pic will mark a collaboration between ADV Films, a producer-distrib of Japanese toons in North America, Nippon producer Gainax and Peter Jackson’s New Zealand-based Weta Workshop, whose f/x wizardry was utilized in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
Gainax co-founder Hideaki Anno helmed the TV series.
Announcing the pic, ADV Films prez-CEO John Ledford said, “The three main players here represent something of a dream team for a project like this. Between the quality and significance of Gainax, Weta’s industry-leading skill in visual effects and our expertise in the marketing and promotion of anime and anime-related content, this project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
While Ledford said the film is in early development, he foreshadowed an “aggressive timetable.”
