Stier steered to Valhalla

Exec to handle 'Punisher,' 'Aeon Flux'

Geoff Stier has joined Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Motion Pictures as production chief and as a producer.

The former Mirage Enterprises exec will now oversee the development and production of Valhalla’s slate of film and TV pics.

Stier takes on many of the duties of former Valhalla Motion Pictures prexy Barbara Boyle, who left the company to become chair of the UCLA Dept. of Film, Television & Digital Media (Daily Variety, April 24).

At Valhalla, Stier will oversee live-action pic “The Punisher,” starring John Travolta and Thomas Jane, which is in pre-production for Artisan Pictures, and “Aeon Flux,” the live-action superheroine project based on the videogame of the same name, in pre-production at Paramount.

“Geoff is a remarkable executive and a talented producer who has the best interest of the film at heart,” said Hurd. “His ability, as well as his relationships with filmmakers and studios, will be invaluable to us at Valhalla.”

At Mirage, Stier worked on development of such pics as “The Firm,” “Sabrina,” “Random Hearts,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “The Quiet American,” “Sliding Doors,” “Birthday Girl” and “Iris,” as well as Anthony Minghella’s upcoming “Cold Mountain” for Miramax Films.

He also produced “Up at the Villa” and “Polish Wedding” and was an associate producer on “Sense and Sensibility.”

Prior to joining Mirage, Stier was the development and public affairs officer at the UCLA Film & Television Archive, where he developed new programs including the Film Foundation with Martin Scorsese.
