Statham’s the static man in ‘Cellular’ pic

'Italian' thesp takes on kidnapping role

Jason Statham will play the heavy in “Cellular,” joining Kim Basinger, Chris Evans and William H. Macy in the David Ellis-directed New Line drama.

Evans portrays a young man who answers a cell phone call from a desperate kidnap victim (Basinger) and has to track her down while making sure he doesn’t lose the connection.

Macy plays a sympathetic cop, and Statham is negotiating to take on the role of the kidnapper.

Electric Entertainment’s Dean Devlin is producing with Lauren Lloyd. Marc Roskin is co-producer. Ellis takes the film after directing “Final Destination 2.”

“Cellular” was originally scripted by Larry Cohen, who dialed up another phone-themed hit this year with “Phone Booth.” Script was rewritten by Chris Morgan and polished by J. Mackeye Gruber and Eric Bress. New Line production prexy Toby Emmerich is overseeing the project with exec VP of production Richard Brener.

The British-born Statham debuted in the Guy Ritchie-directed pics “Snatch” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and just co-starred in “The Italian Job.”
