Sony picks pricey ‘Click’

Exec finds he can rewind his life in Moritz-produced pic

Sony has spent $1.75 million for “Click,” a spec script from the “Bruce Almighty” team of Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe with an eye to developing the comedy as an Adam Sandler vehicle.

Neal Moritz will produce through his Sony-based Original Film and Revolution Studios will co-produce and co-finance.

High-concept story centers on a harried and overly ambitious ad exec who finds he can rewind his life through the remote control of his TV. Though no deal for Sandler is in place, preliminary talks have begun.

“I would love for Adam to do this,” declared Moritz, who hopes to begin production in 2004.

If Sandler comes on board, it would be the sixth comedy he has toplined for the studio after “Big Daddy,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” “Mr. Deeds,” “Anger Mangement” and the upcoming “50 First Kisses,” due out in February. Sandler’s Happy Madison shingle is based at Sony.

Sale, which took place Wednesday, comes in the wake of a powerful perf from U/Spyglass’s “Bruce Almighty,” which has cumed $236 million domestically. Koren and O’Keefe, who originally brought “Bruce” to U as a spec, share screenplay credit with Steve Oedekerk.

For Moritz, the project marks a turn away from his trademark action films, such as both “Fast and Furious” pics, “XXX” and “S.W.A.T.,” due out from Sony on Aug. 8. The producer built his reputation on horror pics (“Urban Legend,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and their sequels) but also produced “Not Another Teen Movie” and “Sweet Home Alabama” and has teamed with Mark Williams and Michael Pierce to set up romantic comedy “Overcommitted” at New Line earlier this year.

Columbia Pictures co-prexy of production Matt Tolmach and senior VP of production Andrea Giannetti will shepherd “Click.” Giannetti brought the project into the studio.

Koren’s previous credits include “Superstar” and “A Night at the Roxbury” along with “Saturday Night Live” and “Seinfeld,” while O’Keefe has logged scripting credits on “Late Show With David Letterman,” “Politically Incorrect” and “NewsRadio.”

Koren is repped by CAA and O’Keefe by UTA.
