Singh has remakes on the Horizon

New 'Father' actioner will be set in U.S.

Distant Horizon has acquired remake rights to the Hong Kong film “My Father Is a Hero,” which stars Jet Li, and the Thai comedy “Saving Private Tootsie.”

Distant Horizon’s Anant Singh will look to set up English-language remakes of both.

Rights to the Cory Yuen-directed “My Father Is a Hero” were controlled by China Star. The 1995 actioner is Singh’s favorite Li film, and he pursued the rights through a relationship that began when Distant Horizon teamed with China Star to bring the “Black Mask” franchise Stateside.

Pic starred Li as an undercover operative who gives up his good name in order to infiltrate a crime syndicate.

“It not only delivers on the action front, but it also has one of the most strongly developed narratives you’ll find in all of Jet’s Hong Kong pictures,” Singh said.

The remake will be set in the U.S.

“Tootsie” concerns a group of drag queens on a plane full of diplomats. When the craft goes down in a remote jungle controlled by guerrillas, a government ops team is sent to liberate the pols. They find that only the drag queens have survived. Bad hair days abound as the queens rely on the Rambos to get out them of the jungle.

Distant Horizon, whose Brian Cox and Richard Jeffery made the deal with Film Bangkok’s Sangar Chatchairungruang and Nucci Chai, will make the stranded drag troupe American and the operatives Marines, with the setting a South American country.

In addition to acquiring and developing the Nelson Mandela autobio “Long Walk to Freedom,” Distant Horizon just made a deal to remake the Japanese anime cult film “Kite” with “XXX” helmer Rob Cohen.
