‘Rosen’ rises to top

Von Trotta's pic to preem at Toronto gala

MONTREAL — German helmer Margarethe von Trotta’s “Rosenstrasse” will have its North American preem as a gala presentation at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival.

The German-lingo “Rosenstrasse,” penned by von Trotta and Pamela Katz, toplines Katja Riemann, Maria Schrader, Jutta Lampe, Svea Lohde and Doris Schade.

After the death of her father, Hannah (Schrader) becomes concerned with the strange behavior of her mother, Ruth (Lampe). When details of her mother’s troubled childhood are revealed at her father’s funeral, Hannah realizes how little she knows about her mother’s past.

The fest also unveiled Euro pics that will unspool in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the fest, which runs Sept. 4-13.

They include the world premieres of Dutch pic “Grimm,” from helmer Alex van Warmerdam, about two children who travel to Spain after being abandoned in the woods by their unemployed father; and “Evil,” from Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom, about life in an oppressive boarding school.

Theo Van Gogh’s “Interview,” another Dutch film, is about the confrontation between a political journalist and an actress. “Errance,” from helmer Damien Odoul, is a love story set in France in the late 1960s.

Soren Voigt’s “Identity Kills,” a German pic, is about a woman struggling with her abusive boyfriend. Wolfgang Becker’s “Good Bye, Lenin!” is the B.O. hit about a loving son who tries to hide the fact from his once-ailing mother that the Berlin Wall has fallen.

“Struggle,” directed by first-time feature helmer Ruth Mader, tells the story of a poor Polish immigrant and a rich real-estate agent in Austria.
