Producer Thomas telling tales

Apted pic to begin lensing next month in London

Juliette Binoche, Laurence Fishburne, Gary Sinise and Samuel Ball will star in “Scheherazade,” to be directed by Michael Apted and executive produced by Jeremy Thomas’ Recorded Picture Co.

Written by Jeff Vlaming, the story is loosely based on the structure of “1001 Arabian Nights.” Binoche will portray the unfaithful wife of a mobster who is kidnapped by his henchmen and must talk her way to freedom.

Budgeted at $12 million, the film is scheduled to begin production next month in London.

Michael Gruskoff will produce the movie, with Thomas serving as executive producer. Jeanney Kim is co-producer, with Max Wong, Karen Firestone and Jane Park as co-executive producers.

This will be the first feature credit for Vlaming, who cut his teeth on TV shows like “Northern Exposure” and “The X-Files.”

Apted was elected to presidency of the DGA in June. He is serving a two-year term.

Binoche most recently wrapped “Country of My Skull” for director John Boorman. Fishburne will next be seen in Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River.”

Sinise stars in “The Human Stain,” which Miramax Films will release Sept. 26. Ball just completed production on “13 Going On 30” for Revolution Studios.
