MADRID — The 51st San Sebastian Film Festival has announced 16 new titles by first- or second-time directors that will compete for its E120,000 ($138,000) New Directors cash prize.

Forming half of the fest’s Open Zone sidebar, most pics are largely unseen on the fest circuit, while the selection continues this year’s strong emphasis on new talent from Europe.

Possible standouts include John Crowley’s Colin Farrell-starrer “interMission,” an ensemble pic set in contempo Dublin; Spaniard Manuel Martinez Cuenca’s “La flaqueza del bolchevique” (The Weakness of a Bolshevik), in which an exec falls head over braces for a teen girl; Guennadiy Sidorov’s Russian rural comedy “Starukhi,” about a gaggle of fiesty old women, which swept kudos at June’s Russian Open Film Fest; and the Czech-Slovak small-town meller “Faithless Games” from Michaela Pavlatova.

Turning on a young woman battling cancer, Xavier Giannoli’s “Eager Bodies” played in the Cannes market. Pieter Kuijper’s real-life gang murderers drama “Van God Los” (Godforsaken) had a strong B.O. traul in Holland.

Victor Manuel Arregui’s “Fuera de juego” from Ecuador, about a boy drawn into murder,” proved a standout last year at San Sebastian’s unfinished pic showcase, “Films in Progress.”

Other pics are relatively unknown entities internationally, however.

Underscoring its gathering production renaissance, Brazil contributes two pics: Vicente Amorim’s bicycle road movie “O caminho das nuvens” (The Middle of the World) and Jorge Furtado’s romantic comedy “O homen que copiava” (The Man Who Copied).

In all 22 pics now compete for the new helmers prize. More will be added when the fest announces its Horizontes Latinos section.
