Napoli Film Fest touts 140 titles

Event driven by three competitive sections

ROME — Peter Greenaway, Vittorio Storaro, Tony Gatlif and Gabriele Salvatores are among the guests of the fifth Napoli Film Festival, running June 15-22 in the Mediterranean city of Naples.

Festival director Davide Azzolini and artistic director Mario Violini have lined up 140 titles, opening with “Nel nome della legge” (In the Name of the Law), directed by Pietro Germi and starring the late Massimo Girotti, who passed away Jan. 6.

Three competitive sections lead the fest: 10 features from the Mediterranean region will compete for the Vesuvio award.

“Making of” is the second competitive section consisting of an international mix of “the making of” 20 European films by directors like Gabriele Muccino, Emanuele Crialese and Danis Tanovic.

The third competition is dedicated to Internet pics set in the Mediterranean.

The fest will also honor Anna Magnani by screening “Roma citta aperta,” “Mamma Roma,” “La carrozza d’oro” and “Campo dei fiori.”

Other events include in-depth look at directors Carlos Saura from Spain and Tony Gatlif, the French Algerian helmer famous for his films on gypsy culture and music.
