Johnny Knoxville has been set to join the Rock in “Walking Tall,” the MGM remake being directed by Kevin Bray. Knoxville will be paid a career best $5 million, sources said.
The reconstituted vigilante tale casts the Rock as a guy who returns to his hometown, stands up to local roughnecks and becomes sheriff. Knoxville will play a local underachiever with a good heart who is deputized by the sheriff.
Channing Gibson and David Klass wrote the script, and shooting begins June 23 in Vancouver, with Myriad and Hyde Park producing.
Guided by CAA and the Firm, Knoxville is slowly varnishing himself from “Jackass” origins to potential leading man material. Knoxville just got a Paramount deal for a comic vehicle spawned by his own idea, about a pair of hot dog vendors who battle over a prime street corner. Jerry Stahl is writing, and Knoxville is producing with Art Linson and John Linson.
