Inside Move: Campion’s ‘Cut’ jogs around fall fests

Pic to see U.S. release in October

Jane Campion may have made her reputation with fest favorites like “The Piano” and “The Portrait of a Lady,” but don’t expect the helmer’s latest pic to be on the fall fest circuit this year.

Contrary to expectations, Campion’s “In the Cut” will not surface at a major festival this autumn.

The psychological thriller, starring Meg Ryan, was widely tipped to bow in Venice and/or Toronto, but isn’t being submitted to either. Instead, Screen Gems will take it straight to U.S. theaters in October, with the European release following quickly after.

“We don’t want to present this to the audience as just another Jane Campion film you might see at Cannes or Venice,” says Francois Ivernel of the pic’s co-financier, Pathe. “It’s a very different film for Jane, an American film with an American star.”

Insiders also say that Campion, who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for “The Piano” in 1993, is somewhat fed up with fests after some bruising experiences.
