The director of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” will next direct a big fat American kid: Joel Zwick is set to helm the feature “Fat Albert” at 20th Century Fox.
Live-action pic’s script comes from comic Bill Cosby and Charles Kipps, and it will be produced by Cosby and John A. Davis’ Fox-based Davis Entertainment banner.
Pic is based on Cosby’s stand-up comedy monologues, drawn from his own childhood, about adolescents growing up in inner-city Philadelphia.
Original Saturday-morning kidshow, dubbed “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids” and later “The New Fat Albert Show,” ran on CBS from 1972-84.
Zwick’s “Wedding” became the highest-grossing indie film of all time last year, taking in more than $241 million worldwide. He is also attached to Mandalay Pictures’ comedy “Centerfold,” set to be distribbed by MGM.
