Andy Garcia has inked to star as Italian artist Modigliani for Bauer Martinez Studios.
Pic is set to start production May 25 in Bucharest, Romania. Pic, based on an original screenplay by Mick Davis, will be helmed by Davis and is being produced by Andre Djaoui, Philippe Martinez and Alan Latham. Antony Blakey will exec produce.
Budgeted at $12 million, indie pic tells the story of the last days and last love of the artist as well as the untold story about the bitter rivalry between him and Picasso. A huge set of Paris in the 1920s has been designed and is being constructed in Bucharest for the production.
“The film is set in Paris in 1919 after the end of the Great War when the artistic elite were all there and the nightlife was filled with dark passions and uncontrollable obsessions,” says Philippe Martinez, chairman-CEO of Bauer Martinez Studios.
“Picasso, Rivera, Stein, Cocteau, Soutine, Utrillo and Modigliani were all part of the artistic life there and we want the film to capture the great rivalries and passions that consumed these remarkable people.”
Garcia stars in Lions Gate’s “Confidence.” Davis’ previous credits include “The Invisible” and “The Match.”
