‘Employee’ back at work

Bull's Eye will fund dark comedy

“Employee of the Month,” a dark comedy previously set up at Lions Gate Films, will now be fully financed by its producer, Bull’s Eye Entertainment, several months after Lions Gate placed the pic in turnaround.

Casting is also well under way, with Matt Dillon and Steve Zahn in talks to star and an offer out to Christina Applegate to round out the cast.

Written by Mitch Rouse and Jay Leggett, pic is a story in the vein of “The Spanish Prisoner” chronicling the 36 hours after a guy loses what appears the perfect corporate job — only to discover that nothing was ever really what it seemed. Dillon would play the pinkslipped man.

Rouse, formerly a writer and actor on the Comedy Central series “Strangers With Candy,” and Leggett, a writer and actor on “In Living Color,” decided to part company with Lions Gate over creative issues some months ago.

Despite the evaporation of the funding and domestic distribution, Bull’s Eye is going forward with the project, which is budgeted at under $10 million, thanks to company principal Bob Yari’s financial backing. Pic is being produced by Bull’s Eye principals Cathy Schulman, Tom Nunan, Yari and Mark Curcio.

Dillon and Zahn are repped by Endeavor, Applegate by CAA.
