Nine films have been firmed for the annual Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now official section of the July 4-12 Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival.
The sidebar, now in its sixth year, features films chosen by Variety‘s international critics, overseen by senior film critic Derek Elley.
The nine films are: “They’ve Got Knut” (Stefan Krohmer, Germany); “Lovers & Leavers” (Aku Louhimies, Finland); “Noi albinoi” (Dagur Kari, Iceland); “Pater familias” (Francesco Patierno, Italy); “The Color of Happiness” (Jozsef Pacskovszky, Hungary); “Falling Sky” (Gunnar Vikene, Norway); “Blue Moon” (Andrea Maria Musl, Austria); “Small Town” (Jan Kraus, Czech Republic); and “My Camera and Me” (Christophe Loizillon, France).
The lineup will be officially unveiled here today.
The filmmakers are showcased in the fest in collaboration with European Film Promotion.
Seven of the nine titles announced are by first-time filmmakers. (One title remains to be announced after Cannes). Elley points out that “the number of first-time works by filmmakers shows the continuing vitality of European cinema.”
