Col, Wagon rope Peoples for ‘Lone’

Writer to team with wife for oater script

“Unforgiven” screenwriter David Webb Peoples is back in the saddle, adapting “The Lone Ranger” for Columbia Pictures and Red Wagon Entertainment.

He has teamed with his wife, Janet Peoples, to write the script. They also wrote “Twelve Monkeys.”

Pic is expected to remain in the classic Western genre, albeit with a new take on the characters of the Lone Ranger, his horse Silver and trusty companion Tonto.

Red Wagon acquired rights to “The Lone Ranger” last year from Classic Media, headed by Eric Ellenbogen and Bob Higgins.

Red Wagon senior VP production Matt Berenson brought the project to the company and oversees its development with Col co-president Doug Belgrad and creative exec Jonathan Kadin.

Lucy Fisher and Doug Wick will produce, with Ellenbogen and Higgins as executive producers.

“The Lone Ranger” began as a radio serial in the 1930s and later became a 1950s TV series. It’s also been translated to the bigscreen more than a half-dozen times since 1938, with the most recent being MCA/Universal’s “The Legend of the Lone Ranger” in 1981.

In February, the WB Network broadcast “The Lone Ranger,” a two-hour movie that examined the hero in his early years.
